Nice antique original spittoon
Features the classic Rockingham mottled brown glaze
Rockingham glaze, a distinctive brown earthenware glaze, is closely associated with potteries in East Liverpool, Ohio, and other areas of the United States. It was originally developed in England at the Swinton Pottery, and the name "Rockingham" was later adopted for similar brown-glazed wares produced in America, particularly in East Liverpool. This glaze is often applied over a yellowware body and features a mottled brown color due to the manganese oxide used in its composition. The Rockingham glaze was imitated by many potteries in the United States, including Bennington, Vermont, and others, leading to a widespread use of the term "Rockingham" to describe brown-glazed earthenware.
